Tigers 6, Red Sox 5: The sweep smell of success

Photo by Gregory ShamusAfter two dramatic wins, the Tigers were facing off against the Red Sox for the third time this week, and hoping to sweep the series. They had Tarik Skubal on the mound, which certainly helped their case, and the Red Sox were leaning on Hunter the first, pesky Rafael Devers got a oneout single. Then equally pesky Alex Bregman singled behind him. A Rob Refsnyder sac fly scored Devers to put the Red Sox on the board first. Skubal collected the final out, but it wasnt an ideal start to the game. The Tigers went 123 in the bottom of the Sox were threeup, threedown in the top of the second Jose Urquidy Jersey. In the home half, Riley Greene kicked things off with a leadoff double. Two outs followed, but then a Trey Sweeney single brought Greene home to tie the game. Starting to feel familiar to Tuesday nightThis embedded content failed to the third it was 123 for both fourth inning, however, saw Bregman solidify his villain role for Tigers fans as he hit a solo home run to start the inning. Three outs followed in order. In the home half, Colt Keith got a leadoff double, followed by a single from Riley Greene. Dillon Dingler grounded into a double play to eliminate Greene, but he was able to score Keith to tie things up again. Zach McKinstry legged out a double, but no additional runs embedded content failed to the fifth, Skubal allowed one hit, a oneout single to Carlos Narvaez, but the Red Sox werent able to get anything else out of him. In the bottom of the inning Kerry Carpenter hit a single that very genuinely felt like it was a home run at first glance, but didnt quite make it happen. But he would be the only one to get on base in the Bregman continued to be annoying in the sixth, with a oneout single, but two outs later it didnt matter because he was back in the dugout. Keith started out the home half with a single. Riley Greene then hammered a nodoubt home run to right center, scoring embedded content failed to then singled, chasing Dobbins from the game. Justin Wilson was in for the Red Sox. Dingler advanced to third after a wild pitch by Wilson, then on a sac fly by Sweeney, Dingler was able to get home, beating out a very good throw by Ceddanne Rafaela. At the end of the inning the Tigers were up embedded content failed to the top of the seventh Nick Sogard got a oneout single. Meanwhile Skubal was throwing pitches reading over 101mph, which is nuts. Then Narvaez walked, a true rarity for Skubal this season. Skubal allowed a single to Rafaela, that scored Sogard, and that would be the end of Skubals night. His final line was 6. 1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, and a whopping K, with 1 HR. He threw 95 pitches. Also, he did exactly what the Tigers needed him to do, and saved the bullpen a lot of extra innings. Tyler Holton was in for the Tigers in relief, hoping to get a nice double play Gleyber Torres Jersey. Instead, he gave up a single to Jarren Duran to score Rafaela. Devers then singled to tie the game. Bregman drew a walk to load things up and push my blood pressure up a few notches. Still only one out. That was it for Holton. Tommy Kahnle replaced him, and Wilyer Abreu came in as a pinchhitter. Abreu hit into a double play and we all collectively let out a sigh of Hendriks was in for the Red Sox in the home half, and with one out, Kerry Carpenter hit into a flyout that might have been the most insane twoplayer catch I have ever embedded content failed to Red Sox were 123 in the top of the eighth. In the home half, Justin Slaten was in for the Red Sox, and he got the Tigers out in the ninth, Will Vest was the newest Tiger out of the pen. Narvaez got a leadoff single and was replaced by David Hamilton as a pinchrunner. Rafaela then singled to put two on. With two outs, Bregman hit into a force out and Gleyber Torres stopped the ball from heading right out into center field, incredible play to end the inning with the game still tied. Aroldis Chapman was in for the bottom of the ninth. A pinchhitting Andy Ibanez got a leadoff walk. New catcher Connor Wong tried to throw Ibanez out as he stole second, and the throw overshot the bag, letting Ibanez get safely to third with no outs. Alex Cora called a timeout to give himself extra time to I dont know, debate if Ibanez touched second? Went beyond second? And it took Cora about a million years to challenge it. The call was one out, series hero Javier Baez was up. Alas, no fireworks for this inning, just a pop out. A pinchhitting JustynHenry Malloy was the last chance for the Tigers in the ninth Akil Baddoo Jersey. The Red Sox delayed the inning even more with a mound visit. Malloy walked it off perfectly with a liner to center. Series sweep! This embedded content failed to load.
